The Return of IPv6 to BunnyCDN

Posted by:

After a rather lengthy delay, we are happy to announce that IPv6 has returned to BunnyCDN. We initially removed IPv6 connectivity due to a rare but recurring pattern of small issues appearing in various places such as router bugs, connectivity issues, poor routing and compatibility issues for some of our users which at the time outweighed the benefits for us. This has been one of the most requested features, but our main priority was making sure the stability of BunnyCDN.

We are now well into 2019 and most of the issues have been ironed out. We feel BunnyCDN IPv6 is ready for prime time. We have gradually been adding IPv6 connectivity over the last few weeks to make sure we don't run into any issues. Today, over 80% of our network is IPv6 enabled and we already serve approximately 20% of our traffic through IPv6.

Interestingly, the main benefit we noticed was an instant decline in the count of DNS queries. Since web browsers default to IPv6 and only then request an IPv4 address, we effectively saved 20-80ms for your users by removing the extra lookup.

Even in this day and age, some networks are unfortunately still neglecting IPv6 so we have not been able to reach a 100% coverage yet, but we have not stopped and are gradually getting there.

In the meantime, we are also working on some great new features based on your feedback from Twitter and Facebook. We have a busy roadmap lined up for the near future, so definitely stay tuned.
